Description

Commission for Renzey, from The Great List!

The last painting was heavy on the oranges, now this one is heavy on the greens. Once again, keeping everything distinctive was tricky. I did my best!

Also, painting this picture was kind of terrifying. I'm always a little uncomfortable when doing clean art because I feel like it's not my strong suit so I was already a little nervous, but that white background took things to a whole new level of discomfort. With a full background, you can usually get away with small blemishes and mistakes, there are ways to clean them up, but if I messed it up here there really wouldn't be anything I could do to fix it- one dropped paintbrush or errant flick of the bristles, one slightly paint-dirtied finger in the wrong place and the whole effect would be fucked up. I could cover it up a little with white paint but it would still be noticeable, it just wouldn't be the same. I did what I could to keep things covered to minimize risk, but you can't mask off everything all the time and masking tape has a bad habit of occasionally sucking paint in under it and making a big mess.

Needless to say, for being a medium some people use to relax, making this painting was a surprisingly white-knuckle affair.

Some credit belongs to Wolf-nymph, as I was asked to make this picture in this kind of style and so far they're the only artist I've seen who does this kind of "island universe" picture regularly, so I pretty much directly referenced their art on how to go about it.
