It's the monthly mini-animation for December! This month, the winning prompt: "Wolfguy having snatched a squirming/struggling Gale away outside in the snow, breeding him while Blue talks to unseen persons cozily inside."
The beautiful combination of the northern lights and a gentle snowfall might make the idea of heading out for a walk at night seem enticing. Just watch your back... there's wolves in them there trees.

Oi oi oi this one ended up being a bit of a nightmare to finish up. It actually started out pretty fun- I enjoyed making the cozy little log cabin and figuring out the lighting, I enjoyed figuring out the texture work and things like how to get everything looping smoothly- getting snow to loop smoothly was a particularly fun challenge, having knowledge of geometry nodes saved the day there. And then it came time to render and everything fell the fuck apart, hah. Blender just... doesn't seem to handle large numbers of objects very well. I originally created the light-beam effect using volumetrics, but something about the setup I've got here was causing it to glitch out in a big way. Huge flickering with the brightness varying a lot on random frames. I thought it was the shadow pool size issue again, but it didn't end up being that- for some reason blender just hated me I guess.
But trying to fix that caused me to constantly trip over other issues. I assumed the snow was the issue because, as previously mentioned, blender doesn't like lots of small objects much, but anytime I made a tiny tweak to the snow it could make huge changes to my ability to render this scene. One small tweak I made at one point for example made this scene go from ~10 gigs of ram to render, to completely filling my 32 gigs of ram, overflowing to my 32 gig page file, filling that up and then crashing 'cause it had nowhere else left to go. Yikes.
I eventually figured out what was causing that issue, and then gave up with volumetrics and cheated with a plane with some gradients on it for the light beam and called it a day. Even now I have no idea what was causing the flickering. WHATEVER IT'S DONE. MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS.
I really need to consider updating my computer, I'm really starting to bounce up against the upper limits of what it can do. It's not a historically terrible time to buy computer parts right now or anything, right?
