Description

Alright, I've done enough moping around, it's time to get back into the saddle.

Had some ideas to mess around with for more blender NPR stuff, arbitrarily picked Tahlia and BJ to start with and spent a few days fiddling around with the models trying to get it to work.

The biggest pain points in NPR (non-photorealistic rendering, aka "Stylized", basically) always end up being outlines and real time shadows. They're both very difficult to get looking right in motion. So difficult in my opinion that nobody has ever quite nailed it yet (though the guilty gear guys are getting pretty damn close)

So the thought occurred to me- what if I just... didn't? Plenty of art styles don't have have linework or detailed shadows and still look just fine. Dialed back on the fur, leaving mainly just key tufts of fluff to make 'em look soft (unsure about this change), some careful use of gradients to help prevent body parts from blending into each other, and toss in a hint of rimlighting just to make the characters pop and boom. Some simple stylized shading for characters. Looks pretty good imo?

So here's a mega quick animation to test the idea out. Backgrounds are definitely going to take me some time to work out in this style, I can't just plop them into realistic backgrounds or it'll look weird as heck, but I know nothing of making stylized backgrounds so there'll be lots to learn on this front. But, here's a first attempt anyway.

It's a quick rough-n-dirty little animation, there's lots of stuff that could use fixing up, but as a quick style test and also get-my-ass-back-in-gear test, I think it'll do. Curious to hear what you think!
