Description
After seeing my recent request, Sentharn was able to put some programming wizardry together to get Blender to do what I've been asking for, and we have a good example here! I'm super excited to get to report that it works -exactly- as well as I'd hoped it would. Look at how god damn good she looks in that last frame! Super smooth fur but full shadow detail.
I believe this works by having blender convert the surface normals of the mesh into a vertex colour each frame, and then using that vertex colour (with some vector math magic) as the normals for the hair. Viola, beautiful soft fluff. This is exciting. :D
If nothing else, we have a fantastic proof of concept that getting the hairs to follow surface normals does look every bit as nice as I'd hoped, and is definitely worth looking into!
