I was a little nervous while I was painting the background for this because it's extremely rare for me to use pure black paint. It's a bit of a 'rule' not to use pure black in art, though like all art rules it can certainly be broken if you use it with intent. Watercolours tend to be very light and sort of airy which can make it difficult to get real deep darks any other way, so I thought the application of pure blacks would help sell the nighttime feeling a little bit, as well as making the characters pop in contrast. That was the theory anyway... how well it turned out I'll leave up to you!
